WA R&D at the cutting edge of 3D technology

With the launch of the fourth annual WA Innovation Awards in May it’s easy to see that the innovation which Australians have a reputation for is well and truly alive in the State. One such innovation is development of 3D technologies by Digital Dynamic Depth (DDD), a US company that has its research and development arm based in WA.
In 2010 DDD won an award in the Innovation section of the WA Information and Technology Awards (WAITA) and their technologies can be found in 26 countries throughout the world.
With its success at the cinema over the past decade, 3D has moved out of the realm of novelty and into mainstream entertainment. Now 3D is headed for the home, with 3D TVs, PCs and mobile phones.
Dr. Julien Flack, CTO of 3D solutions company DDD in Perth, says that global shipments of 3D TVs are expected to increase 463 per cent to reach 23.4 million units in 2011.
The cost of 3D consumer electronic devices is declining rapidly, and DDD’s TriDef 2D to 3D conversion technology ensures a ready supply of 3D programming, movies and games, overcoming one of the biggest barriers to mass market 3D adoption.
DDD was founded in Perth in 1993 and, with its cost effective 2D to 3D conversion capabilities and licensing of its TriDef® 3D solutions, is a key player in bringing 3D to the mass market,. Leading brands including Intel, Samsung, LG Electronics and Texas Instruments licence these solutions for their 3D TVs, PCs and mobile phones.
DDD’s R&D arm remains based in Perth, with headquarters in Los Angeles and a listing on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM Market.
3D gaming is driving the adoption of 3D PCs. Major manufacturers are rolling out 3D PCs and monitors, taking advantage of the perfect pairing of cutting edge technologies and the early adopter nature of video gamers. TriDef® 3D Experience provides solutions for 3D PCs, enabling hundreds of the latest Direct X 9, 10 and 11 PC games to be converted automatically to 3D. It also automatically converts PC media files, photo files and DVDs to 3D, and enables play back of originally made 3D content encoded in a variety of popular 3D formats (including top/bottom, 2D plus depth). TriDef® 3D Experience is bundled by leading manufacturers with notebook PCs, all-in-one PCs and PC monitors. In addition for TVs, Blu-ray players and set top boxes, this technology enables the viewing of originally made 3D content, and conversion of 2D to 3D in real time. The solution is also targeted at Android based smart phones and tablets and enables the automatic conversion of video and photo content from 2D to 3D for the latest glasses free mobile displays.
