The event will feature the following eminent scientists as speakers on the researcher panel:
Nobel Laureate Professor Barry J Marshall AC (University of Western Australia)– awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 2005, in conjunction with Dr Robin Warren, in recognition of their 1982 discovery that a bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, causes one of the most common and important diseases of mankind, peptic ulcer disease. His achievements have been widely recognised and he is the recipient of many awards. Read more…
Professor Nadia Rosenthal, PhD- founded the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute at Monash University, Victoria, which serves as Headquarters for the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honours including the Ferrari-Soave Prize in Cell Biology. In the last decade her focus on the biology of insulin-like growth factors has led to significant advances in novel cell-based therapies for muscle ageing and heart disease. Read more...
Professor William N. Charman, PhD (Monash University)- Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director, Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Melbourne, Australia. His research interests include absorption and bioavailability of poorly water soluble drugs, lymphatic drug transport, lead candidate optimisation, and the discovery and development of drugs for neglected diseases. His awards include the GlaxoWellcome International Achievement award in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, and many others. Read more...
Professor Steve Wilton, PhD (University of Western Australia) - Head of the Molecular Genetic Therapy group at the Centre for Neuromuscular and Neurological Disorders, Western Australia and President of the Australasian Gene Therapy Society. He is now evaluating the use of antisense oligomers to modify gene expression, in particular to promote exon skipping as a therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the most common and serious form of childhood muscle wasting. This exon skipping therapy can be applied to many other genetic and acquired conditions. Read more...
Professor Levon M. Khachigian, PhD (University of New South Wales)- Director of the UNSW Centre for Vascular Research. He is a vascular cell and molecular biologist who has pioneered the development of novel strategies targeting key regulatory genes in a variety of vascular disorders such as post-angioplasty restenosis, arthritis, ocular neovascularisation, tumour angiogenesis and growth. His gene-targeting “molecular assassins” will enter clinical trials in cancer patients in 2010. His innovative research has been recognised by a number of awards including the Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research and many more. Read more...
Professor Matthew Kiernan, PhD (University of New South Wales) - Professor of Medicine UNSW and Vice President of the Australian Brain Foundation. A clinical neurologist and neuroscientist at the forefront of breakthrough research into human neurophysiology, his recent translational studies in motor neurone disease have identified abnormalities in patients before disease manifestations have appeared.
