A Western Australian, $32 bottle of Voyager Estate 2007 Shiraz has been voted better than a $550 bottle of Grange Hermitage in the respected Penguin 2010 Australian Wine Guide. Melbourne-based wine judge, Mr Stock, gave the Voyager Estate 96 points, just one point ahead of the  2004 Penfolds Grange in the 2010 guide.

Australia’s celebrated wine industry stretches across one the most diverse environments I the world. The wide variety of climates, soils and elevation results in a wide range of grapes grown across the 60 regions and results in some spectacular wines. With over 2,300 wine companies and over 172, 676 hectares of land under vine it’s no wonder their fierce competition for the best of the bottles.

The Voyager Estate Shiraz 2007 is described as having a lovely perfume with flavours of mulberry, blackberry spice with a hint of anise and well-balanced oak, and is a perfect accompaniment to venison or shanks.

This is the latest accolade in what has been an impressive year for Western Australian wines.

Sandalford’s 2008 Margaret River Range shiraz won the best dry table red at the National Wine Show in Canberra, Brookland Valley’s 2008 chardonnay won trophies for the best wine, best white and best chardonnay at the Qantas Wine Show and was also named winery of the year in James Halliday’s 2009 Wine Companion. Knee Deep winery’s 2008shiraz was also awarded best red and best shiraz at the Qantas Wine Show.
