WA's educational institutions partnering with industry
Educational institutions in Western Australia recognise a need to connect with industry and provide students with work experience or internships while studying.
Top graduates from Perth universities and TAFE have been highly sought after by not only Western Australian companies, but also national and international companies, who recognise their quality of education and more importantly, demonstrate a need for highly skilled employees.
One such example is how the University of Western Australia is working closely with international companies to provide scholarships to top performing MBA students.
Also, Curtin University secures internship placements at international companies as part of their new Master in Management program.
Courses in business as well as oil, gas and petroleum engineering programs are becoming increasingly popular in Western Australia as a result of implementation of the new Gorgon Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project and WA universities are teaming up with industry leaders such as Chevron, Woodside, Shell and BHP Billiton to train students on the job.
TAFE also offers on-the-job training in many areas, including the opportunity for cookery students to train the five-star Burswood International Resort and sport development students can work with top Western Australian football (AFL) and rugby teams.
There are relatively few scholarships available to international students at postgraduate level however the quality of education, good skills and experience gained via internships and work experience at almost all educational institutions are stepping stones for students interested in an 18 month Graduate Visa.
This visa allows overseas students who do not meet the criteria for a permanent General Skilled Migration visa to remain in Australia for 18 months to gain skilled work experience. Holders of this visa may apply for permanent residence at any time if they meet the passmark on the General Skilled Migration points test.
