The Government of Western Australia European Office became involved in promoting Western Australia as an education destination in 2000. It reflects the growing importance of international education to the State, which in 2009 accommodated over 45,000 enrolled international students, a 20 per cent increase from 2008.

Many students from throughout Europe relish the opportunity to study in quality universities, colleges and English schools whilst experiencing the quintessential Australian lifestyle in Western Australia.

Education in Western Australia

There are five world-class universities in Western Australia.

Universities provide programs at undergraduate (Bachelor) and postgraduate level (Grad/Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Master by Coursework or by Research programmes, as well as PhDs).

Each university individually assesses students’ eligibility to be accepted into a course. The Government of Western Australia European Office can guide students in their choice of course and advise on level of qualification.

The vocational education and training sector (VET) is also well represented in Western Australia. There are 11 Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges as well as many other private colleges in Perth. All provide Certificate I, II III and IV, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas to international students.

English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) are offered by over 20 English schools in Perth with some being individual schools and others affiliated with colleges or universities. Many will also arrange accommodation and social events for students.

Students from all over the world come to Perth to learn English while enjoying the lifestyle and weather. Many choose shorter programmes, up to 12 weeks, some undertake preparation courses for specialised English exams and there are also students who improve their language skills to undertake further study at a college or a University in Perth. Many schools offer Cambridge and IELTS preparation courses.

Students can take the IELTS test at two locations in Perth.
