Major infrastructure projects planned

Western Australian Premier, the Honourable Colin Barnett MLA, has major infrastructure plans and the recent State Budget included a record A$8.3 billion (£4.1 billion) infrastructure investment in areas such as social housing, schools, roads, hospitals and regional development.

The new priorities include doubling the size of the Ord River irrigation area in the far north of Western Australia (WA), development of the Oakajee deepwater port and rail infrastructure in the Mid-West region of WA, and the sinking of the Northbridge rail line in the Perth city centre.

Perth in top five liveable cities worldwide

Western Australian capital city, Perth, has been ranked in the top five liveable cities in the world in the latest Economist Intelligence Unit survey.

Perth tied for fifth place with Canada's Calgary. Melbourne, the only Australian city to score higher, ranked as the third best place to live in the world.

Australia was a regular feature in the top 20 with Sydney coming in equal ninth, Adelaide at 11 and Brisbane at 16.

The survey assesses living conditions in 140 countries around the world on stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure.
